Tips for a godmother/godfather
Unlike the responsibilities of a mob gang's godfather or godmother that mostly consist of orders to kill and corrupt, a baby child's godfather/godmother is the second most important person, if not the first, in a baptism / christening Christian rite celebrating the new life given by God.
Baptism (from the Greek noun βάπτισμα baptisma;) is a Christian rite of admission and adoption, almost invariably with the use of water, into the Christian Church. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baptism)
Most parents, choose a close person, a friend or a relative as their baby's godfather/godmother. According to the the Greek Orthodox tradition a godfather/godmother is responsible for the following:
- Provide the large candle that stands by the baptismal fond (usually decorated according to the theme of the baptism)
- The oil set (oil bottle, soap, 3 little candles for the baptismal font) and the towels
- Martyrika or baptism pins (small pins with a cross)
- Decoration of the baptismal font (if the priest permits it)
- The golden cross to be worn by the baby
- Baby's clothing (the baptism gown, dress or suit, the baby's underwear and shoes).
- The baby's box or suitcase for all the above accessories (after the baptism the box is used as a holdall or toy box in the baby's room).
